A1 Life Drawing

My foundation course has taught me that I am able to draw in a much freer way as before this, I had previously only ever been shown how to draw technically and in proportion. I'd also only ever put technical drawings into my sketchbooks or boards and now I much prefer now working in these big inky washes and broad brush strokes that give a much looser feel to my work. Before life drawing I had found it difficult to keep my drawings looking abstract with minimal detail yet drawing the body almost felt natural to not have to put the small details in as it seemed to work best without.

I had never previously done any life drawing and the thought of it wasn't something I had been interested in before starting the course. However as soon as I was given the chance to draw a human figure, the curves and the organic shapes on the body became very natural for me to draw. The first week in these sessions I tried drawing just one figure in the centre of the page and although I felt that this worked well with the inky drips it was layering the figures that I feel worked the best. It seemed to give the bodies a sense of movement and emotion due to the drastically different poses.

From wanting to pursue a career in fashion, I had only drawn figures totally out of proportion but precise. The life drawing sessions have shown me how I can feel much more confident in drawing more conceptual yet proportional figures.
